Sharing the Best Advice I’ve Received

It’s hard to narrow down the best advice I’ve ever received. If you’re active in the writing community, you’re often flooded with suggestions and well-intentioned advice. If I had to separate the wheat from the chaff, the best nugget of advice I’ve had is this: Write.

I’ve taken that advice and capitalized on it—changed it into something for me. My advice to you is that if you want to become a writer, or are already an author and want to become better, then do the following four words. Write. Edit. Read. Repeat.

Write every day. Write as often as possible. Try to write as much as you can even if that is only for short bursts of time. Focus on your craft. When I am writing, I try to write fifteen-hundred good words a day. Sometimes I write more. Sometimes less, but I put pencil to paper and write. Use standard paper. Use a writing journal. Use your phone. Use a tablet. Use a computer. Just use something and write.

Edit when you can. If you’re not writing then you should be editing already written work. If you need help editing, find a local writing critique group. But you must polish your work in order to improve.

Read as much as you can. When you are not writing or editing then you should be reading. Read anything. Pick a genre. It can be from your own genre or a different one. It can be a paperback, hardcover, ebook, or audiobook. It doesn’t really matter. Just read something you enjoy.

This is the trifecta of advice. Understand that it is a continual revolving door. You should either be writing, editing, or reading at any given point in time. It is a process to keep your creative juices flowing.
