Top 10 Favorite Books
This list is my top 10 all-time favorite books or book series and why I love them. They are not listed in any particular order.
Harry Potter Series – J.K. Rowling
The Harry Potter books were a phenomenon that I didn’t catch until late in the game. I started reading them about ten years after they were published and when I did, I was hooked by Harry, Ron, and Hermine. The books took you into the wizarding world where you became friends with Harry’s classmates, felt bullied by Draco, and felt scared of the Deatheaters. Rowling’s ability to captivate her audience and make them twist like a worm on a hook is spectacular.
Iron Druid Chronicles – Kevin Hearne
Atticus O’Sullivan and his Irish Wolfhound, Oberon, had me from page one. The seven-book series took me on a journey of adventure, suspense, and humor. Atticus’ friendships with the paranormal community was inspiring. His battles with demons and gods kept me on the edge of my seat. The humor had me laughing out loud. I loved the series so much that I read the whole thing five times. It’s been years since I read about the antics of Atticus and Oberon, but I smile every time I think about them.
Bill Hodges Trilogy – Stephen King
This trilogy has a way to get to a reader. King has a talent to make you love, hate, laugh, and cry. This series has some of the most memorable and vivid scenes I can remember in a book and that says a lot coming from someone who loves reading this author. I love the heroes and I love to hate the villains.
The Mither Mages Trilogy – Orson Scott Card
I gobbled up this trilogy and wanted more. Orson Scott Card created a fantastic link between worlds. It didn’t matter which world you were on. Gods were everywhere. He kept you on your toes from the beginning until the end. It is a fantastic young adult series involving action, deceit, romance, death, and much more.
11-22-63 – Stephen King
I was surprised in many ways by this book. There was no gore. No horror. Nothing scary. But there was suspense. Thrills. Action. Mystery. And the best part about the book—love. It is a phenomenal read and one that keeps you guessing as you root for the hero page after page after page.
The Fireman – Joe Hill
This was the first book I read of Joe Hill and I was hooked by his wordplay, world building, and character development. It was a story which kept me riveted to the edge of my seat. I was turning pages long into the night. I rooted for the main character as if I were her best friend.
Jack Reacher Series – Lee Child
One of my favorite series. Hands down. I’ve read twenty-five of his books in the series. Each one was different. Reacher was a dependable character with reliable—almost feral—reactions. But the thing was—it never got old. I wanted him to react a certain way and he seldom let me down—on occasion Reacher even surprised me. If you crave action and a strong protagonist then Jack Reacher is your man.
A Game of Thrones – George R. R. Martin
This series takes time to digest given its length, but I’d recommend it for any fan of medieval fantasy. Keep it away from the little kiddies. There’s plenty of sex and adventure to last until you start the next book a begin to crave it all over again. There are a lot of characters, but it’s a great read.
Mercy Thompson Series – Patricia Briggs
The Mercy Thompson series was a fantastic representation of a female lead character. She was smart, sexy, and cunning. She was independent and carefree and only needed a male when she wanted companionship. Mercy isn’t your typical damsel in distress type of woman. She’s more apt to bite your throat or swing a wrench at you before anything else. I loved the series.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians – Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson is a great story for kids and a great read for adults. It was one of the first middle grade adventure series for me and opened my eyes to writing for kids. It’s a fun, humorous, and action-packed storyline of demigod tweens in a fight for their lives against mythological creatures in a contemporary urban fantasy backdrop.
