My Writing Style

I’m often asked interesting questions about being an author. One of my favorite questions is about my writing style. I’d like to share with you my sense of style and also what you can expect to experience in my books.

So, how do I come about writing the stories I do? That is interesting tale in itself. While a story is comprised of a multitude of elements, such as: characters, setting, conflict, and theme, I find one of the most compelling elements to be plot. It is within the main plot and the various sub-plots, which are woven just like the accent color through the fabric of a sweater, that I find myself caring most about.

Why is that? Although I am often pulled through a story by my bond to a specific character or characters, the plot(s) within a story is what I feel is the driving element. It’s what made me care to write the story to begin with and, if done well, is what makes you care to read all the way to the end.

So, how do I come up with my ideas? Do I have brainstorming sessions with a crystal ball? No. Not really. A story often comes to me through a casual flirting with an idea. I may be staring out the window thinking about XYZ and all of a sudden ABC pops into my head. Maybe I hear a news broadcast, or read about an event in the newspaper that sparks a tangent thought.

No matter how I came to the idea, I end up chewing on a concept and working scenarios out in my mind until I come up with a plot that not only is believable, but one that readers can become invested in. A topic that actually matters. Many of my works involve family conflict where some element of the family structure is put at risk. It is that sense of trauma and drama that I try to tap into when creating a story. I want to tap into the root of what is real and then present a plausible truth throughout my story’s journey.

That’s when my characters come and pull you through the pages with them. I believe that to have a truly good story you must start with a nugget of truth—a believable storyline. And then you have to be hooked by the characters—the heroes and heroines—so that you continue on until the end. Thread them together with a strong setting, a conflict that grips you by the wrist or throat, and interlace a well-managed theme and you have yourself a hum-dinger of a read. That’s what I hope to deliver in my books—a piece of work that resonates with my readers.

So, what is coming in the short-term & down the road? My first book, THE LOST DEMIGOD, is a middle grade novel. It is launching on Amazon in paperback and eBook on March 2nd, 2026 and will be available to retailers nationwide. It is the first book in a series called Hanna Steele and The Demigod Chronicles. You can expect more middle grade and young adult books to come in the near future. My second book, SLEEPWALKERS, is a dystopian thriller and I anticipate it being ready for launch by the middle of 2026. The next two books to follow are THE BONE MAIDEN and DOUBLE NICKEL EXPRESS. I hope to have one ready by the end of 2026 and the other somewhere near the start of 2027. While the best laid plans of mice and men are made with the best intentions, my plan is to publish one (hopefully two) books a year. If the planets are aligned with the moon and stars then maybe I can do better, but no promises.
