What Inspired Me to Become an Author
I’ve always been the creative sort even when I was little. But I didn’t start really writing until I was in my 40s. My early career took me on a different path. After I finished my bachelors degree at Indiana University in the early 90s, I was a salesman. I hadn’t found my true calling and so I went to work in a factory doing hard labor but making good money. I spent a couple years in that industry, saving enough money to put myself back in school. I went to grad school and graduated with a masters degree in history. I wanted to teach college, and I did so for a while, as an adjunct professor at DeVry University.
While I taught school in the evenings, I also attended classes during the day. After an accelerated program I graduated with a second bachelors degree. This time I graduated top of my class summa cum laude with a degree in computer science.
I then owned a successful web design and development business for many years. After the birth of my first child, I launched another company. This one was a children’s company which was to feature hand and rod puppets along with cartoons to educate children about the world around them. The company was going to feature twenty-two minute shows on television and also be released to DVD, however, the business capital never came through and in the end the children’s company had to fold.
That was the point I made the decision to do something where nobody else held the reins to my success. I wanted to be in control of my own creativity. So, I started to write. There was a learning curve to writing fiction. Sure, I was experienced in language arts. I took classes in English while an undergraduate and wrote a graduate thesis of the celebrations of the calendar year of the later Stuart period. I was an experienced writer, but nothing longer than a creative short story and my thesis, of course.
What did I do then? I studied. I studied the process and techniques for writing friction and I practiced every day. At first, let’s just say my writing wasn’t up to par. But I worked at it diligently and never gave up my dream. Over a decade later, I have twenty-one manuscripts completed. I am in the process of editing them one-by-one to prepare them for publication. It has been a journey of many twists and turns but it is an adventure that I’ll never regret.
Writing, for me, is an extremely fulfilling activity. I’m glad I started down this road to adventure and you’re welcome to join me. I read somewhere that it never takes away from the flame of one candle to help light another candle. So, join me and we’ll march together with candles in one hand and pen and paper in another down the road to adventure.
